When Do I Work? New teachers to ILA with no experience generally begin teaching with younger children. The childrens schedule is after school, so weekday evenings and weekend days. Usually an EY (English for Young Learners) teacher will work Monday, Wednesday, Friday, or Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday & Sunday for a total of 20-24 hours a week teaching time. If a teacher has a year's experience or an A or B+ on the CELTA they can teach EA (English for Adults), which is normal hours Monday to Friday. For both departments, EA and EY, there are also non-teaching options such as level testing or material development if a teacher wants extra hours.
ILA students study on an hourly system per course with most courses lasting about 120 hours. ILA has many different branches and areas of study, including young learners, adults, IELTS prep, Corporate English, and Martin College programs. The students range from 4 years old up and many students stay with ILA for years. There are students who have studied from the time they were 4 until they left for University at 18.
